"Everyone is greeted with a “darlin’” at Marlow Fish Bar, whether it’s your first visit or you’re the kind of person who asks if the owner’s car has been fixed yet. The same family has been running this retro-looking Anerley chippy since 1962, with nods to their Cypriot heritage in the form of an evil eye fish pendant and staunchly south east London roots in the form of a CPFC shrine. photo credit: Daisy Meager photo credit: Daisy Meager There’s a familial rhythm to Friday evenings at the fish and chip shop: orders recited at the red and mint-green counter then relayed to the father-son duo, a soft sizzle as everything is fried to order, and a chorus of “salt and vinegar?” before the scrunch of chips wrapped in paper. Go for the cod, which has a pleasing crunch and flaky fish, and don’t skip a pot of thick, savoury curry sauce. A buttered roll on the side is a must, too.
