We trust Hawaiian Drive-Inn for all our katsu and musubi needs - Review - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Hawaiian Drive-Inn (which, despite its name, is a takeout counter with no dedicated parking) has two things going for it: huge portions and consistently solid mains. At this Excelsior spot, hefty piles of katsu are fried until audibly crunchy, and the loco moco beef patties are juicy and tender. Sides like the musubi are also generously sized to the point where the seaweed struggles to contain it all. Where this place falters is its sides. The mac salad is bland and overcooked and the rice tends to arrive slightly mushy. Still, Hawaiian Drive-Inn is a great choice for a quick to-go meal that won’t run you more than $15—just make sure to bring cash. photo credit: Erin Ng Food Rundown photo credit: Erin Ng Chicken Katsu Plate Yes, the katsu is crispy and juicy, but what we love even more is the tangy dipping sauce. It’s worth asking for an extra portion to eat with any leftover rice. photo credit: Erin Ng Loco Moco Solid all around, with gravy that’s a bit too sweet. But the patty and the runny over-easy egg do their best to balance it out. photo credit: Erin Ng Spam Musubi Tasty, but there’s too much rice. But if you aren’t interested in a full meal, this is the perfect option." - Patrick Wong
