"Relentlessly adorable, Cucharita is a flower garden that magically shapeshifted into a Mexican City-style breakfast and lunch spot in Montrose. The restaurant is bright and colorful with pastel-colored bistro tables, shelves full of floral-printed merchandise, and a counter full of fruit-topped pan dulce. Cucharita, in both name and function, is the little sister extension of Cuchara, a Mexico City-style lunch and dinner bistro on the same block. Like any younger sibling, Cucharita copies some of Cuchara’s style, but only Cucharita serves all-day breakfast. photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva Because Cucharita is open from 7am to 3pm everyday, you can have a long, relaxing, and dare we say, positively leisurely meal at Cucharita. Try the chilaquiles, a staple Mexican breakfast of fried tortillas drizzled in thick crema and salsa. Or the savory huevos motuleños mixed with peas, ham, and salsa smothering fried plantains. Even the coffee drinks are served with a tiny shortbread cookie. And everything arrives on, you guessed it, delightful ceramic and enamel plates. photo credit: Liz Silva Join the fellow midweek people-who-lunch crowd—eating breakfast at noon on a Wednesday basically counts as a vacation—bring your parents and enjoy a few boozy coffees, or pick up a box of pan dulce to-go. Food Rundown photo credit: Liz Silva Chilaquiles De La Semana Cucharita changes what comes with the chilaquiles every week. You can always expect fried tortillas and an egg, but sometimes the salsa is red, green, or something in between—all equally bright and delicious. Huevos Motuleños This hearty Yucatan dish specifically originated in the town of Motul, and is usually composed of eggs, black beans, and cheese with plantains and peas. We love the addition of cubed ham, which makes the dish feel a little Seussian. photo credit: Liz Silva Waffle De Maiz Not only is the waffle made with corn, it’s also topped with corn kernels soaking in cajeta, a sweet and rich goats’ milk caramel. We kind of wish it came with even more corn. photo credit: Liz Silva Pan Dulce The entire front counter is filled with trays, baskets, and bowls overflowing with baked goods and pan dulce of all kinds: croissants drizzled in chocolate, pink conchas, cream horns and fluffy cakes. It makes you feel a little dizzy. Maybe grab a heart-shaped churro while you decide on your order." - Chelsea Thomas
