"This pastel-colored, fast-casual vegan spot in Culver City quietly shares the same strip mall as a Brazilian barbecue joint, Dave’s Hot Chicken, California Pizza Kitchen, and Sidecar Doughnuts. But Hey, Sunshine Kitchen isn’t just the token health food spot among a cluster of cheesy, deep-fried options. It also serves plant-based comfort foods that hold their own against the real thing. The hot chicken sandwich delivers an audible crunch without the weird spongey texture that ruins some meat alternatives, and the smoky “beef” in the tacos tastes like it just came off a charcoal grill. Bowls and salads are light but satisfying, including our favorite with a golden chickpea fritter, a boatload of veggies, and a drizzle of lemon aioli. The parking situation can be a chaotic mess, so don’t be surprised if you have to circle the lot a few times if you’re stopping by during the lunch rush." - Cathy Park
