"If the walls at Highbury Vaults could talk, they could probably tell you a lot about the booze preferences of Bristol’s reigning academics throughout the ages. Sitting at the top of St Michael’s Hill in Kingsdown, this 19th-century pub trades in charm, history, and what we like to call ‘gorgeous vintage tat’. If you’re not smitten by the little toy train that choo-choos its way from the front of the bar all the way back to the pool table, then frankly, you don’t deserve to drink Bristol’s finest pint of Guinness. Like all the best boozers, the crowd here has that egalitarian appeal of a jury—punk teens sharing rollies in the back garden, dapper gents perched at the bar, and 30-something friends taking over the private front snug area for a catch-up enabled by multiple babysitters. If you’re seeking a pint in Bristol and like your pubs old, cosy, and a little tatty around the edges, then this 1840s looker is faultless." - Heidi Lauth Beasley
