"Son Del North won’t put rice in your burrito. That’s kind of their thing. Inspired by Northern Mexico, this counter-service spot that started on the Lower East Side offers a protein-packed product with no unnecessary fillers and ample melted cheese. The result is rather gooey, but incredibly satisfying, thanks in large part to the stretchy Sonoran flour tortillas. There are few different routes you can go—including shrimp, chicken, and vegan chorizo—but start with the smoky carne asada. If you’re looking for a meal that’ll only run you around $10, the plain bean and cheese is another great, if slightly monotonous, option. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Pause Unmute Food Rundown Carne Asada This is what you came for. Cut into ragged chunks, the carne asada is so thoroughly grilled it tastes a bit smoky. Don't forget about the green chili dipping sauce on the side. photo credit: Kate Previte Frijol Con Queso The silver medal goes to this burrito stuffed with a simple, gooey mess of beans and cheese. Boring? Slightly. But it's a hefty meal for just $9. photo credit: Kate Previte Breakfast Burrito We had high hopes for the breakfast burrito. Just look at that tortilla. How could you not? But even if you add the optional bacon, this thing mostly just tastes like a pound of scrambled eggs. photo credit: Kate Previte Totopos For a place known for its flour tortillas, Son Del North produces some very good (corn) totopos. They're thick, crackly, and appropriately greasy. photo credit: Kate Previte" - Bryan Kim
