"Everyone’s got their favorite local dives, and 8 Fat Fat 8, which opened nearly 40 years ago, is one of ours. It shares a parking lot with a car mechanic, while inside, regulars play pool, throw darts, and sing karaoke, which is practically a professional sport in Honolulu. Tuck into a booth for the stir-fried lettuce and the Fat Fat special chicken, which simultaneously proves that fried chicken can be light (its skin is crisp and batterless) and you can find terrific food in a dive bar (in Honolulu, at least). Also get the yuzu cheesecake, partly for the novelty of getting dessert in a dive bar, and partly for the three-bite slice that’s tangy and creamy. photo credit: Laura La Monaca" - Martha Cheng
