Follow Your Heart Market & Cafe - Review - Canoga Park - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Before collagen smoothies at Erewhon, there were avocado sandwiches at Follow Your Heart. This market and cafe in Canoga Park has been around since the ‘70s and looks like Erewhon if it had been designed by Paul & Linda McCartney. There are lava lamps and dreamcatchers next to kelp chips and beets. It’s also the birthplace of a veganaise empire. Maybe you’ll recharge your aura with a crystal as you peruse produce, but any visit to this kooky spot isn’t complete without a simple, dare we say nourishing, meal at its flagship cafe. Follow Your Heart serves a straightforward deli/cafe menu with tons of vegetarian and vegan options: soups and sandwiches, but also miscellaneous pizzas, nachos, and a popular chicken pot pie that tastes like the middle school lunch day you looked forward to. When in doubt, go with the classic “Love Plate” combo with a half-sandwich, your choice of soup, and drink for less than $20. Sometimes a veganaise-slathered avocado sandwich and a cup of creamy broccoli soup is exactly what the doctor ordered. photo credit: Sylvio Martins Food Rundown Green-Eyed Girl It’s a fresh-pressed green juice. It tastes like health in a way that makes you forget you ate two bear claws for breakfast. photo credit: Sylvio Martins Avocado, Tomato, Sprouts Sandwich No wheel-reinventing happening here, but something about this combination of veggies just feels right. The housemade bread is a little dry, but it’s nothing a healthy slathering of veganaise can’t fix. photo credit: Sylvio Martins Chicken Pot Pie Even if you’ve never had this particular chicken pot pie before, you have. It tastes like every respectable chicken pot pie ever served in a cafeteria, and we mean that with affection. The well-seasoned sauteed kale and roasted beets on the side are also way better than they need to be. photo credit: Sylvio Martins Creamy Broccoli Soup You’ll see a chalkboard of rotating soup specials on the wall, and we lucked out on this salty throwback. It’s more cream than broccoli, but we lapped it up like a soft-food-loving baby all the same. photo credit: Sylvio Martins" - Sylvio Martins
