"When you think of a South Jersey sandwich, your mind might go to something long, meaty, and greasy. Sandwiches at Maria’s Bread Sandwiches are elegant, balanced and flavorful, served in an adorable, colorful setting reminiscent of a tea party. While the sandwiches are definitely “cheffy,” they’re not overwrought—prepared by a team that knows how to source farm-fresh ingredients like Jersey tomatoes, Birchrun Hills cheese from Chester County, PA, and local salad greens. The lemonade is made from lemons, not powder, and plates are zhuzhed up with freshly grated parm and herbs. The service is correspondingly friendly, fast and welcoming. These are fine-dining standards in a place where you can dine in yoga pants. The care shows in the tight menu of breakfast and lunch options that go beyond very good sandwiches (the Kennett Square mushroom grilled cheese is our favorite) to include great salads like the milanese, topped with creamy and crunchy avocado and celery salad. Weekends add legit sourdough bagels to the menu. photo credit: Gab Bonghi photo credit: Gab Bonghi photo credit: Gab Bonghi photo credit: Gab Bonghi photo credit: Gab Bonghi photo credit: Gab Bonghi Pause Unmute The restaurant occupies two store fronts, one for takeout and the barista and the other, which serves as a dining room. Join remote workers eating while half-listening to their zoom meeting and local moms and babies meeting up for lunch in the charming dining room with mismatched furniture and a library of hot sauces. Or takeout and raise your work lunch game with a sandwich that will make your coworkers jealous. Food Rundown Whitefish Salad Toast It’s right there in the name—the bread is the star at Maria’s. Any of the toasts are a good bet, but if you, like us, are on avocado overload, get the whitefish. It’s Jewish deli-quality but comes in a less messy portion with fresh cracked pepper. photo credit: Gab Bonghi Mushroom Grilled Cheese Sandwich This is not your mother's grilled cheese. This beauty incorporates Kennett Square mushrooms and Birchrun Hills cheddar to be fancy but still features good-old american cheese for meltability and familiarity. This is a smart sandwich. photo credit: Gab Bonghi Milanese At a place called Maria’s Bread Sandwiches, it may seem silly to order a salad, but the Milanese may beat the sandwiches. A plumper-than-usual cutlet of breaded chicken is fried to still juicy, sliced, and topped with a crispy-crunchy-creamy avocado celery salad. This is a must order and is up there with the chicken caesar from Carina Sorella. photo credit: Gab Bonghi" - Jonathan Deutsch
