Rome’s Fountain of The Four Rivers Has Finally Reopened After Jubilee Restoration Works

Located in Piazza Navona, just a five-minute stroll from the Pantheon, this Baroque fountain designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini has just reopened after a seven-month restoration that removed limescale and algae and treated damage from smog and mineral deposits that had built up since its last restoration two decades ago; described by Rome’s superintendent for cultural heritage as just as vital to the city as the Trevi Fountain, it was originally built for a historic jubilee in 1650 and has now been freshly scrubbed ahead of the Vatican’s Jubilee Year of Hope, with the water ceremonially switched back on by Rome’s mayor Roberto Gualtieri on December 19. - Liv Kelly
