"Set on Fazenda Trijunção in the Cerrado savanna, the seven-room Pousada Trijunção feels like a sleepy outpost built from sustainable materials where hammocks, home cooking and what I was told are the world’s best caipirinhas set the tone. The lodge is quirky and comfortable — rooms decorated with plants and art by local artisans, solar-heated hot water, and an observation tower where I watched vividly colored birds with ornithologist Vinicius Vianna. The property supports conservation and nondestructive farming practices and partners with the Onçafari NGO to track and study maned wolves: I joined guides on a dusk jeep track and watched Nhorinha trot past in the lowering light, an intimate encounter that underscored both the thrill and fragility of the species (Nhorinha later died, but her daughter Savana was later seen with cubs). The on-site conservation work and game drives make the lodge a compelling base for seeing the Cerrado’s wildlife and learning about efforts to protect this endangered savanna." - Stanley Stewart Stanley Stewart Stanley Stewart is a multi-award-winning travel writer and author of three acclaimed books.
