Highway Inn Kaka'ako

Hawaiian restaurant · Kakaako

"Don't expect frills at this family-friendly diner, which serves up cheap and cheerful Hawaiian classics. Chicken wings, beef stew, andpork lau lau wrapped in taro leaves jump off a menu that has barely changed since the first Highway Inn opened in 1947. Favorites include thekaluapig and cabbage and the loco moco (rice topped with a hamburger patty, fried egg, and gravy). This second branch of the mini chain, in the artsy, up-and-coming Kaka’ako neighborhood of Honolulu, uses gluten-freekiawe-bean flour in some recipes and caters to vegetarians with offerings like seared local tofu on organic greens with ginger vinaigrette. Highway Inn also runs the Bishop Museum Café. Save space for the iconic Hawaiian dessert haupia (coconut-milk flan)."
