"Don't expect frills at this family-friendly diner, which serves up cheap and cheerful Hawaiian classics. Chicken wings, beef stew, andpork lau lau wrapped in taro leaves jump off a menu that has barely changed since the first Highway Inn opened in 1947. Favorites include thekaluapig and cabbage and the loco moco (rice topped with a hamburger patty, fried egg, and gravy). This second branch of the mini chain, in the artsy, up-and-coming Kaka’ako neighborhood of Honolulu, uses gluten-freekiawe-bean flour in some recipes and caters to vegetarians with offerings like seared local tofu on organic greens with ginger vinaigrette.
