"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? Nestled on a quiet street in the heart of historic Vieux Quebec, Hôtel 71 is a sexy, contemporary outpost. Stepping into the lobby, you're likely to hear a cacophony of English and French as guests curl up by the fireplace, clink wine glasses, and talk about their adventures of the day. What's the backstory? The hotel opened in 2005, which is basically yesterday in Quebec City terms. The seat of French North America since its founding in 1608, Quebec City is the most intact fortified town north of Mexico, with many of its colonial ramparts and fortifications still standing. But don't make the mistake of thinking this city is in any way dusty or tired—places like Hôtel 71 affirm that contemporary and creative energy still very much flower in this city. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? The modern decor is a stark and appealing contrast to this neighborhood's colonial roots. Our spacious Superior Room had generous windows which let in ample natural lighting. The bathrooms are outfitted with glassed-in rainfall-jetted showers (a welcome change from 17th-century Quebec plumbing), and each room has a sleek desk with integrated electrical outlets for remote workers. Make sure to ask for a higher-floor room with views of the St. Lawrence River, for optimal views and natural light. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? Free and fast WiFi, just as the settlers imagined it. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? The ground floor restaurant Il Matto is a sexy, modern take on Italian—and also takes care of the room service. Salmon tartare is a Quebecois favorite, and the spaghetti carbonara is a cozy, filling way to round out a long day of sightseeing. And the service? The front desk staff are impeccably bilingual, and provide excellent tips on how to best explore Vieux Quebec. Whether you want to practice your French or would rather stick to your English, expect to be greeted with the cheerful, officially unofficial greeting of Quebec: "Bonjour, hi!" What type of travelers will you find here? Due to its proximity to the cruise terminals, the hotel (before COVID, at least) receives a fair share of senior travelers on layover before or after their St. Lawrence Seaway adventures. Otherwise, it's a fun mix of artistic types and design lovers who want something a step above the basic Quebec City hotel. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? The hotel isn't just a part of the scene, it is the scene. Its perfectly central location means that all of Vieux Quebec's best restaurants, shops, and museums are just steps outside your door. Is there anything you'd change? Room service is only available during limited dinnertime hours—not ideal if you're coming back from a late night at the pubs. Any other hotel features worth noting? The hotel offers free bicycle rentals so you can cruise all over Quebec City. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? It's an adorable, fresh take on a longstanding tourism destination." - Todd Plummer
