"From a distance, Amelia Island’s Elizabeth Pointe Lodge looks like a CEO’s summer share—a massive Nantucket shingle digs tangled in Floridian weeds, its sweeping rooflines and broad porches are distinctive of the most upscale of 1890s Victorian beach getaways. The interior is designed to match, and far from recycling bright, beachy tropes, instead opts for subtler period antiques, oversized tubs, dark wood floors, and brass lighting fixtures. And much like the Victorians, the Lodge knows how to throw a proper party—or at least a social gathering—offering complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres to its patrons each evening, along with an oceanfront breakfast and a newspaper at your door each morning. You won’t have to bribe your spouse to schlep those pesky supplies, either, since the hotel provides dedicated beach chairs and umbrellas—so all you have to worry about it bringing a good book. Many suites are ocean-facing, enjoying access to 13 miles of pristine beach, and are just a short drive from the more populous Fernandina Beach, where the monthly Artrageous Artwalk is a big draw, along with the champion golf courses and restaurants—particularly since the Lodge doesn’t have dinner options.
