Andaz Singapore

"How did it strike you on arrival? The riches of this Andre Fu-designed hotel have to be sought out. The plain, narrow ground floor makes you feel like you're in a quiet suburban office building. But take the elevator to the 25th floor, where the hotel lobby is, and there's an explosion of activity—people are checking in at the island reception desks, others are downing beers in the lounge that were specially brewed for Andaz Singapore, and yet others are grazing on the smorgasbord offered by the five restaurants on this level. What’s the crowd like?Stylish solo travelers, young families and corporates. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.My fairly spacious Andaz King smelled faintly and deliciously of leather and had a Japanese vibe - maybe it was the low-set furniture and wood accents. There were some unique details that channeled the hotel’s neighborhood - a green cushion was the exact hue of the nearby Sultan Mosque; the mango yellow shophouse doors that divided the bathroom from the sleeping area echoed the heritage buildings a stone’s throw away. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The mattress was nice and firm, the down pillows a tad soft (firmer ones are available on request). How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that worth a mention?Fu's attention to detail is mind-boggling - everything from personally supervising the tanning of the leathers used, to designing the drawer handles. As a result everything is in danger of being stolen—the chic wood-and-leather magazine rack is at the top of that list. The mini-bar has been just as carefully executed. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The shower area was spacious and had an industrial vibe in the form of concrete walls, but was softened by cheery touches like a sunny yellow ceramic bath stool. The yummy bath products were created for the hotel by French perfumer, Christophe Laudamiel. Deliciously fresh and a tad musky, they're made from a locally inspired combination of ingredients (orchids, ginger lilies and more). We all need some good Wi-Fi. What’s the word on that?Very fast and free. Anything stand out about other services and features? The gym is open 24-hours, which is never a bad thing. There is a very cool rooftop bar overlooking the surrounding Arab-influenced Kampong Glam neighborhood with teepees that you can chill out in. What was most memorable about your stay? The hotel's public areas really add value to a stay here. They're lovely to meander through - there's a treat around every corner, be it an interesting design detail or a cool spot for a bite. Bottom line: worth it?It's a great all-round experience in a richly cultural neighborhood." - Audrey Phoon
