"Why book? You can’t get much closer to the Alamo than this historic gem. Set the scene The hotel is a destination itself, with people popping in for a photo at the bar and tours passing by outside. The clientele is a mix of convention-goers and first-time visitors in jeans and sensible walking shoes. In the spring, keep an eye out for a bedazzled Fiesta queen (or two), as The Menger is a popular venue for the annual Mardi Gras–esque celebration. The backstory Since opening its doors in 1859—just 23 years after the Battle of the Alamo—the Menger Hotel has seen it all, hosted icons like Babe Ruth and Roy Rogers, and is now witnessing the redevelopment of Alamo Plaza next door. The rooms All 316 guest rooms have a traditional feel with floral bedspreads and matching curtains and pillows. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it complements the Victorian aesthetic. Menger Petite rooms are perfect for solo travelers. Food and drink Before he was president, Theodore Roosevelt recruited men for the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, better known as the Rough Riders, at The Menger Bar. Today, you can dig into comfort foods and sip classic cocktails while Roosevelt’s portrait looks on. And the bar isn’t the only spot with presidential ties. Bill Clinton was so obsessed with The Colonial Room Restaurant’s homemade mango ice cream, a menu staple for more than 160 years, he had it shipped in for both inaugurations.  The neighborhood/area The neighboring Alamo is, of course, a must-see, but also check out the recently revitalized Hemisfair Park and La Villita, an arts district with more than 25 shops and galleries. The service The hotel has an outdated concierge app (the events calendar is from 2019, for one) but makes up for it with good ole’ fashioned hospitality. The valet service, in particular, receives high marks for staff attentiveness and a reasonable rate—at $35 a night, it’s well below the downtown hotel average.  For families Kids love the oversized pool, heated November thru February, and nearby entertainment options abound. The mall next door has an aquarium, movie theater, and LEGOLAND Discovery Center, while Hemisfair Park’s Yanaguana Garden delights with creative climbing structures, public art, and a giant chess set.  Accessibility General accessibility info is buried on the website, but there are ADA accessible rooms with the choice between double queen or full beds.  Anything left to mention? The Menger is said to be one of the most haunted places in the city, but its spirited past is more intriguing than sinister. Learn more via Sisters Grimm Ghost Tours." - Tommie Ethington
