Spicers Potts Point, Sydney, Australia - Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"How did it strike you on arrival? Set in a pretty row of three white terrace houses in inner-city village Potts Point, Spicers Potts Point blends 1880s architecture with seamless modern extensions. It’s the first Sydney launch for the upscale Queensland hotel brand, which also has elegant New South Wales retreats in the Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley. Nice. What’s the crowd like? This grown-up, peaceful boutique property, designed by Brisbane’s Rowena Cornwell, attracts interstate visitors from within Australia, including Queensland, as well as international guests. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. With just 20 spacious contemporary rooms, Spicers is genuinely intimate. Rooms in the rear extension are more modern, but a serene, neutral palette rules throughout. The three Victoria Terrace Suites at the front flaunt period fireplaces with doors opening onto private terraces overlooking the tranquil street. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us? The Spicers Retreat bed is famously comfortable, with soft linens and luxe Bemboka blankets, throws and towels. Entry-level Queen Rooms offer premium King Koil beds, all the rest are King sized. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? The minibar includes complimentary snacks, such as cookies, fruit and trail mix, with a tea and coffee-making kit. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. Ensuite bedrooms feature sleek, modern bathrooms. Queen and King Rooms have a rain shower; all other tiers include a bath. Leif products harness Australian native botanicals. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word? Free Wi-Fi throughout keeps you connected. Room service: Worth it? Spicers’ reception desk doubles as a welcoming bar for a complimentary cocktail and canapés each evening between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why? Service is friendly, relaxed and personal. You’ll also receive a Spicers Potts Point Passport booklet listing tips for local drinking, dining and shopping, including The Butler opposite for share plates and cocktails with city-skyline views. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. The light, airy ground-floor lounge teams evocative paintings of underwater bathers by Sydney artist Martine Emdur with blue and green coastal decor. A skylight and plants lend it a conservatory feel. A tasty breakfast here is included in rates. There’s no in-house restaurant, but you’ll discover great dining spots nearby. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? You’ll want to move in permanently if you book a romantic Victoria Terrace Suite, ideal for sitting out on your balcony admiring the view. Bottom line: worth it, and why? Many of Sydney’s top sights are a pleasant stroll away, and you’ve got foodie Potts Point’s rated restaurants and bars at your fingertips." - Sophie Davies
