"After more than 20 years in business, I found the new Westmount outpost follows the same approach as the Mile End original, offering all-vegan burgers, sandwiches, bowls and brunches dotted with tempeh, végépâté and coconut bacon among other meat substitutes. Like the mothership, it has a take-out counter separated from the main dining area on a downstairs level, but the decor here is more formal and muted—think earthy brown wall panelling and banquette seating—compared with the vibrant, diner-esque flagship on St‑Laurent. The location had been in the works for over a year and opened amid recent labor turbulence at the main St‑Laurent restaurant, where 65 staff voted to strike before a tentative agreement was reported. Aux Vivres, which started in 1997, has concentrated on getting products like tempeh into supermarkets (it bought Noble Bean in 2014) and runs a major commercial kitchen on Casgrain Avenue in Mile End, making Westmount technically its third location; it is open at 4896 Sherbrooke West from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily for now, with expanded hours planned." - Tim Forster
