"I visited an industrial-style all-day cafe on Pentagon Row (now Westpost) that roasts beans from countries such as Ethiopia, Colombia, and Guatemala and just started serving food; Origin Coffee Lab & Kitchen occupies a 2,000-square-foot space at 1101 S. Joyce Street. The space resembles a hip Brooklyn cafe, with a sleek letter board listing brewing methods like Chemex and Hario V60 and options for cortados, smoothies, and “red” (Rooibos) lattes, while a glass-enclosed roastery at the center brews coffee from up to ten different regions at a time. The all-day breakfast menu features pancakes, avocado toasts, Benedicts, and espresso tiramisu, and noon-to-night offerings include pork schnitzel with risotto and braised pulled pork sliders; hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. for indoor dining and takeout. Owner Andy Mekonnen, who opened the first Origin in Dubai, says the concept is to have “good food, coffee, and pastries all in the same place,” and that “everything here is made from scratch, we don’t outsource anything,” with plans for future cupping events and educational courses once COVID-19 restrictions ease." - Tierney Plumb
