"Started as a popular burger purveyor operating out of a local ghost kitchen, Bonehead Burger Co. is gearing up to open two dine-in locations in the San Diego area. Created in 2022 by brothers Kit Wingate, a 15-year Navy veteran, and chef Blake Bone, who trained at the San Diego Culinary Institute, they began grilling burgers in the backyard of the VFW in Imperial Beach and quickly drew lines out the door. The menu highlights the Bonehead burger—topped with special Bonehead sauce, cheddar, crispy onion straws, maple bourbon bacon, and scallions—as well as a mammoth six-patty smash called the “Big” Schulte, plus loaded fries and tater tots; Bonehead won best burger at the San Diego Reader’s Burger and Beer Festival in 2022. After expanding with a food truck and pop-ups, the brothers are opening a sit-down spot that will share a kitchen with Seaside Candy and Ice Cream and a larger Old Town Urban Market location that combines multiple former units, offering indoor and ample outdoor seating with the ability to serve beer and wine.
