"Opening this April in Midtown at 4501 Woodward Ave. (Ste 103), this will be Detroit's first restaurant dedicated entirely to poke bowls. The fast-growing suburban chain — which debuted in Southfield last summer, quickly followed with a Farmington outpost, and has additional locations planned for Troy and Ann Arbor — adopts a fast-casual format where diners can choose from eight signature bowls or build their own. Customers pick white or brown rice or salad greens, add scoops of seafood, chicken, or tofu, and customize with toppings like mango, corn, jalapeño, crispy onions, wasabi, and citrus ponzu. While poke originated in Hawaii as sliced sushi-grade raw fish seasoned with salt, seaweed, and kukui nuts, the mainland version commonly resembles a rice bowl with additions such as avocado, soy sauce, and spicy mayo. Although several Detroit restaurants offer poke and a few suburban shops are dedicated to it, the region has been slower to embrace the national poke craze, and this chain’s rapid expansion suggests there is still room for growth." - Brenna Houck
