"Housed in the hallowed former Toronado space on 30th Street, I find Fairplay to be a new neighborhood hangout with the central divider removed and the original high ceiling revealed, giving the brick-walled bar an old-school gym feel. The team behind Fernside and Bluefoot Bar & Lounge (including Adam Cook and GM Shane Gerde) positioned it as a community-oriented spot that’s “a little sporty” rather than a traditional sports bar, though there are plenty of TVs. It blends Bluefoot’s dedication to soccer with an all-day food menu, offers 20 beer taps plus cocktails on draft and classics like margaritas, palomas, and mules, and serves dishes ranging from smoked and fried chicken wings and a pickle-brined fried chicken sandwich to a tostada salad, tofu sandwich, cheeseburger, and fish and chips. Programming will include international soccer, support for San Diego Wave FC, hockey, and more offbeat sports. Opening hours will settle to 11:30 a.m. to midnight daily (kitchen closes at 10 p.m.), with plans to open at 6 a.m. for international soccer and a small morning menu of breakfast sandwiches, burritos, tacos, and French toast." - Candice Woo
