"While La Casa de las Mayoras is just a short drive from Cancún’s hotel zone, it feels like a different world. This restaurant inside a converted home settles you back into the heart of Mexico, serving up some of the best food in Cancún, period. It was one of only three restaurants recommended in Cancún by the Michelin Guide and is named after the elderly women who fed the rebels during the Mexican revolution. Fittingly, La Casa de las Mayoras is also quietly revolutionary, as a vast majority of the menu is vegan. Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed in through the open kitchen lined with traditional clay cazuela cookware by owner Maria Gonzalez, who will take your order while her son, chef Christian Rodríguez Fuentes, whips together everything from grilled portobello mushrooms bathed in a rich Oaxacan mole to plant-based chilaquiles. Hang with the spot’s mascot, Walter the puppy, as you sip on a coffee to start. The café de olla, served in a clay mug, has a warming molasses and cinnamon note thanks to the addition of raw piloncillo sugar. La Casa de las Mayoras uses jackfruit as a major source of protein in its cochinita pibil, roasted and stuffed poblanos, and tortillas covered in a pumpkin seed sauce.
