"Housed in an A-frame building that used to be a Wienerschnitzel on a prime Hillcrest corner, I discovered a new spot for fresh coffee and doughnuts called Copper Top Coffee & Donuts. It's the first solo project from owner Josh Mccorkle, a restaurant and coffee industry vet who aims to combine fast service with high-end coffee and doughnuts; there’s a walk-up counter on W. Washington Street, a patio for seating, and a drive-thru window at the back expected to handle brisk business. Rococo Coffee Roasting (run by Mccorkle’s partner) will produce a white-label coffee just for the shop with plans to relocate its roastery to San Diego, and the menu offers all the classic espresso drinks plus specialties like housemade salted caramel and rose vanilla lattes. The doughnuts are cooked fresh to order and guaranteed to be available all day, with cake-style varieties priced around $2 each — examples include the Tortoise (chocolate, caramel, walnuts) and the 16 Candles (white chocolate, coconut, sprinkles). Eventually the shop will add grab-and-go breakfast and lunch items (breakfast sandwiches, pastries from Bread & Cie, oatmeal and yogurt parfaits), smoothies and Bootstrap kombucha on tap; current hours are 6 a.m.–6 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m.–6 p.m. weekends, with a grand opening celebration planned for Sunday, January 14 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. featuring a food truck and dollar doughnut deals." - Candice Woo
