"I reported that Houston-based Shipley Do-Nuts just opened its first New Orleans–area location in Old Metairie on Tuesday, April 10. The chain, which began in Houston in 1936 selling a dozen doughnuts for five cents and now has over 300 franchised stores across the southern U.S., is best known for its yeast doughnuts, cake doughnuts, filled doughnuts, and kolaches—like the “Big Earl,” made with Earl Campbell sausage, cheese, and jalapeño. The franchised Old Metairie spot, owned by WDSU anchor Scott Walker and his wife Jennifer, Desi Vega (of Mr. John’s, Desi Vega’s Steakhouse, and Dei Vega’s Burgers and Shakes), and developer/contractor Jimmy Licciardi, sits at the corner of Metairie Road and Labarre Drive and is open 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week; a dozen glazed runs around $8.50." - Stephanie Carter
