"Opened in the late 1970s by Chin Boon Wong and Ching Su Wong at 683 Broadway in Chinatown, the original Ton Kiang began as a purely Hakka comfort-food spot (not serving dim sum) and was noted in a 1982 New York Times article as “the first Hakka restaurant in San Francisco” and “one of the city’s current stars,” with the profile specifically calling out the kitchen’s use of Chinese wines; that original Chinatown shop eventually closed as the business shifted and expanded to other locations." - Luke Tsai
