"Opened well over a year after the store at Astor Place debuted, the Japanese restaurant at 770 Broadway (at East Ninth Street) is showing signs of life: its careers website lists job openings for multiple staff positions including a general manager gig that pays from $94 to $113K. The chef, according to the website, is the Berlin-born Oliver Lange, onetime head chef of NYC’s London import, Zuma, which debuted in New York in 2015; his background includes having worked in a Michelin-starred German restaurant; starred on a German reality cooking show; and launching his own pop-up restaurants before moving to London a decade ago. In London he ran the Magazine restaurant, a Japanese spot within the Serpentine Gallery. The restaurant space — to the left of the main entrance in the East Village — has been earmarked as a spot for sushi, Champagne, and oysters since the store first opened in the neighborhood in 2023. (Meanwhile, the store’s fish market was accused of copying a local business resulting in a lawsuit.)" - Melissa McCart
