"I learned that as of Monday, January 29, Tender Greens — a fast-casual leader since launching in 2006 with locations in Liberty Station, the UTC area, Mission Valley and downtown San Diego — will no longer accept paper money. The founders said the cash-free move responds to advances in technology and changing times and is intended to save time by speeding orders and freeing up employees for other tasks; they also noted it’s cleaner and better for the environment because there will be no armored trucks picking up and dropping off cash, no more plastic deposit bags, and no paper for cash deposit slips. The cashless setup was tested successfully at the chain’s new El Segundo branch, and other big-name companies such as Starbucks are testing similar pilots. Going forward Tender Greens will accept credit, debit and mobile payments, and starting in February it will add a digital gift card feature in its mobile app so customers can pay in-store or online or share balances with friends and family." - Candice Woo
