"Opened in 2015 by Irene Serrano and Miguel Martinez in a corner spot of a strip mall on Washtenaw Avenue in Ypsilanti, this small eatery built a reputation for a rotating selection of Mexican, Honduran, Guatemalan and other Central American specialties — including pupusas, plantains, tamales, fried fish with tajadas, enchiladas catrachas, chicken tacos with cabbage salad and fried yuca — and draws weekend crowds for huevos rancheros and generous bowls of soup. The restaurant was vandalized in a weekend break-in that employees discovered Sunday morning; thieves stole cash and food and damaged other property, prompting a temporary closure. Neighbors and local restaurants have rallied with donations and a GoFundMe fundraiser, and several nearby food businesses are donating portions of sales (including a $5-per-bag contribution from a local roaster’s special blend and contributions from pop-up vendors at nearby cafes). The owners thanked the community for its support; anyone with information about the break-in is asked to contact the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office anonymous tip line at 734-973-7711." - Monica Williams
