"Located in Kennesaw’s Legacy Park just off Jiles Road, I found Independent Grounds Cafe, a coffee shop owned by resident Lorna Heid that primarily employs people living with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Heid was inspired to open the café by her daughter Emma, who suffers lasting effects from a traumatic brain injury after contracting meningitis at birth, and she hopes the cafe will help the community better understand the world of those living with special needs. The menu features a variety of coffee and espresso-based drinks and grab-and-go pastries; the shop also offers free Wi-Fi and sells merch, including t-shirts, travel mugs, and its own blend of coffee beans. It is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m." - Beth McKibben
