"Tucked beneath Restaurant Hà on the corner of McGill and William in Old Montreal, I found Nhâu Bar to be a seductive new basement watering hole with a distinctive vibe. Designed by Amlyne Phillips (who also designed Hà and Kampai Garden), the 50-seat space is replete with paper lanterns and table lamps, low seating and tables, and decorative knick-knacks that add just the right amount of kitsch. The cocktail menu, put together by Maxime Daraize (St-Henri’s Ludger) and Tao Zrafi (The Cloak, Toronto), leans pan-Asian: several cocktails feature sake or Korean spirit soju and Southeast Asian staples such as tamarind and pandan, and one even incorporates a Japanese mushroom dashi, showing some creative twists. Originally conceived as a noodle bar with cocktails, Nhâu instead offers Vietnamese eats from Hà’s menu through to 11 p.m. nightly; it is open at 600 William from 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday (closed Sunday)." - Tim Forster
