"Responding to the government shutdown’s impact on SNAP recipients, this Bed-Stuy bakery is starting a food drive on Friday, October 31, setting a bin outside for donations of canned foods that don’t expire, plus formula and diapers for babies; each week, the team will drop everything at the food pantry at John Wesley United Methodist Church, chosen for its capacity and because it accepts baby products. Co-owner Isa Steyer told me the response has been “pretty crazy,” with other businesses and organizations asking to use their drop as a location, and she emphasized that “neighbors and community are the final safety net” and that this is the kind of business they set out to run. The team is also planning to bake more so they can donate loaves to mutual aid group Feed the People Bedstuy." - Nadia Chaudhury
