"Inspired by the luxury social clubs of 1940s New York City, I see Black Rail Kitchen + Bar bringing a dose of style to Carlsbad's La Costa. Replacing Tuscany in the Plaza Paseo Real complex, the 6,000-square-foot space—designed by North Park-based MY Studio ID’s Melissa Young, who also worked on Tinleaf and Beach Plum and designed Waterbar, Stake Chophouse, and recent Bird Rock Coffee locations—employs warm wood, brass, leather, and green velvet upholstery, includes two separate dining areas each with its own bar, outdoor seating, and a mural of the restaurant’s namesake, the sparrow-sized black rail bird. Owned by longtime North County residents Grant and Jenny Gottesman (the couple behind Tinleaf Fresh Kitchen and Beach Plum Kitchen), Grant brings 30 years in the local hospitality industry, including 18 years as vice president of restaurants for Karl Strauss Brewing Company. Opening in early summer, Black Rail will offer a modern American menu, serving weekday lunch and daily happy hour and dinner, with a bar pouring cocktails, beer, and wine." - Candice Woo
