"Chef Ray Garcia is expanding his Downtown empire with a big new Financial District restaurant called Trademark, planned for the corner of Wilshire and Figueroa in the 915 Wilshire building. In partnership with restaurateur Beau Laughlin (who is behind spots from Kettle Black and Sawyer in Silver Lake to Atrium in Los Feliz), the food will not be a shot-for-shot remake of the modern Mexican, purely Angeleno menus Garcia crafted at BS Taqueria and Broken Spanish; instead it will focus on more straightforward California fare with Garcia’s flair, blending elements of both chefs’ known styles into a progression that is sometimes comforting and familiar and sometimes unexpected, and spending part of the menu “exploring foods and ingredients that are commonly misunderstood and under-appreciated.” Laughlin will design the ground-floor space (which sits on a slant, so the dining room is being lifted and leveled while vaulted ceilings remain), and the room will feature a big front staircase, a hanging chandelier as a centerpiece, a roomy indoor bar, a small terrace, and seating for roughly 80 diners. The plan is to open Trademark as a dinner restaurant this fall, then add a busy Financial District lunch service soon thereafter." - Farley Elliott
