Rosie's General - Review - Kingston - Hudson Valley - The Infatuation

"If your life was a romcom set in the Hudson Valley, Rosie General would be the magical spot where you would bump into your former flame who now runs a flower farm. But instead of having your meet-cute over an average deli spread, you can share a cinematic-looking meal at the window counter with lemon cakes from the pastry case, crackly fresh loaves of bread, and a delicious báhn mì. photo credit: David A. Lee Pause Unmute There’s no wrong order here, but it’d be a mistake to leave without trying at least one of their sandwiches. All of them are served on Rosie General’s fantastic bread with perfect crumbs you’d want to inspect under a microscope, and they’re filled with things like thick-cut grilled pastrami and homemade headcheese. There’s a perfect sandwich for whatever you’re in the mood for, whether it’s crushed pistachios sprinkled on a blanket of whipped ricotta or a refreshing tuna salad on a scorching hot day. You can carry them out for a quick waterfront meal, but it’s also easy to feel at home settled into a snug wooden booth or at bar stool in front of the marble counter. photo credit: David A. Lee Pause Unmute You’d have to come back dozens of times to try everything on Rosie’s stacked menu, but convincing yourself to become a regular is an easy sell. We’ve come in on bitterly cold mornings to have an open faced egg toast topped with white beans, greens, and chili crisp at the window counter, and we may or may not have double parked outside a few times to grab some giardiniera and chicken salad for a summer picnic. We wish every town had its own gorgeous deli that made us yearn wistfully for something as simple as a BLT. Until that happens, we’ll keep coming back to Rosie. Food Rundown Pastries The selection here rotates super frequently, but you should always plan on grabbing something here for a decadent sweet treat. Get at least one slice of cake to have with your morning coffee. If you’re looking for a last-minute gift for your host for your upstate weekend, a box of their salted chocolate chip cookies is always the move. photo credit: David A. Lee Egg Toast There isn’t a lot going on with this open-faced sandwich, but there’s beauty in its simplicity. The toasted sourdough slice is the perfect vehicle for saucy braised greens and white beans, and the housemade chili crisp gives each bite a nice kick of heat and flavor. The soft jammy eggs are just runny enough to spread across the wide piece of toast, so you can have a little bit of gooey yolk in each bite. photo credit: David A. Lee Báhn Mì A thick strip of savory, gelatinous headcheese is the main event here, but the supporting cast make this sandwich taste delightful and well-rounded. The thin slices of smoked ham are a nice contrast to the slab of headcheese, and the jalapeño mayo and raw vegetables help break up the richness of the meat.
