Ilios - Review - Hotel Zone - Tulum - The Infatuation
"There’s a stretch of the Tulum coastline where it feels like the restaurants are competing for a noise complaint. You might think you took a wrong turn and ended up at a techno festival. Once you’re in, though, it feels like the club it sounds like: people stand on tables and chairs, waving their napkins in the air. Food comes secondary here, and it’s easy to be so caught up in the chaos that you might forget to order any. You could have a full dinner here, but we’d recommend ordering a few nibbly bits to snack on instead. The mediocre Greek-inspired food—like a BBQ sauce-drowned braised beef cheek, or a basic Greek salad, isn’t that great, but it’s also not the reason you came. The impromptu conga lines and staff wearing gimmicky, toga-style dresses are why. Food Rundown Ilios Chips These fried zucchini discs aren’t as crispy as they should be, but they’re a fine enough snack for munching on while you watch other guests pour drinks into strangers’ mouths. Orzo And Braised Cheek Braised beef cheek and orzo sounds great on paper, but the pomodoro sauce is bland and the honey butter too sweet. Even the huge slices of parmesan aren’t enough to save it. Burrata This burrata comes in a pool of bright pomodoro and nutty parsley pesto, split down the middle, both of which give the light cheese a nice flavour." - Rianne Shlebak
