City Island Pizza Company - Review - City Island - New York - The Infatuation

"Unless you’re one of the 4,417 full-time residents of City Island, getting to this casual Italian restaurant is a bit of a journey. But make the trip for the Sunday Supper deal at City Island Pizza Company once, and you’ll soon be making plans to come back again. With a large sign welcoming you to "The Seaport of the Bronx", this cozy green-and-white pizzeria is the kind of place where regulars arrive to find their orders waiting for them, still hot. Conversation flows through the candlelit dining room as people debate City Island’s ferry requirements, or the most superior pasta shape while eating steamed mussels and parmesan-crusted polenta fries. photo credit: Alex Staniloff photo credit: Alex Staniloff photo credit: Alex Staniloff photo credit: Alex Staniloff photo credit: Alex Staniloff Pause Unmute The biggest reason to become a regular yourself is the $25 unlimited Sunday Supper. It includes salad, garlic bread, and bucatini with Sunday gravy, full of tender sausage and large, dense meatballs. But this is also a great spot on any night when you want to get out of your own neighborhood for some pizza—try the Red Hot Chili Pepper Pie, topped with n’duja and hot Italian sausage—and a steady stream of meatballs and wine. By the time you're on your second glass of nebbiolo, you might start feeling like you’re on vacation, even though you’re just on an island in the Bronx. Food Rundown Sunday Supper It begins with garlic bread focaccia and continues with classic house salad, the kind that lets the iceberg lettuce shine. And finally, the pasta and Sunday gravy, which are served separately. The red sauce tastes like it's been cooking for longer than you've ever stood in a kitchen before, and it includes meatballs and two kinds of sausage, both hot and sweet. The deal costs $25 and is available Sundays, noon-8pm. photo credit: Alex Staniloff Polenta Fries We can't say we usually order polenta fries, but in this case we're glad we followed our neighboring table's advice and got some. And now we're recommending them to you. These fries are smooth and buttery on the inside, crisp and parmesan-crusted on the outside, and served with marinara sauce. Red Hot Chili Pepper Pizza This pizza has a lot going on, and it all works. There's enough cheese to top approximately three pizzas, two types of meat—n'duja and sausage—and some light spice, from both the sausage and calabrian chiles. Order it, even if you're here on a Sunday and already overwhelmed by the unlimited meat. Pizzas start at $18 for a basic red pie, and there are six different kinds available. photo credit: Alex Staniloff Chicken Parmesan If you're here on some day other than Sunday and you're still in pursuit of soul-soothing red sauce, the chicken parm is the way to go. It's not as thin as some of our favorite chicken parms, but the edges are crispy, and it comes with linguine, as all chicken parm should. photo credit: Alex Staniloff" - Willa Moore
