Rising Son - Review - Avondale Estates - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"Rising Son is one of the few breakfast spots in Avondale Estates that’s actually worth the typical 20-minute brunch wait. So ignore the random stuffed coyote at the host stand and the very basic dining room that has all the pizazz of a compliance training summit. You’re here for their solid takes on Southern brunch classics. video credit: Juli Horsford The creamy cheddar grits don't disappoint. And the biscuit sandwich reminds you of a better time before fast food chains corrupted the breakfast staple. Also deserving of a whirl are fun wild cards like a flatbread with hummus and eggs and breakfast dumplings, which are fairly decent pork dumplings with a sticky maple-soy sauce. We will hand out skip cards to the Meat and Three, with just-OK proteins (shrimp and fried chicken) and sides (collards and black-eyed peas) that don’t excite as much as the breakfast-y options. Come on a weekday if you don’t want to wait (or the pressure to socialize), but we prefer the  weekends, which have a friendly neighborly buzz that helps to liven up the place. Food Rundown Fried Green Tomatoes When fried green tomatoes are on the menu, it’s basically a Southern law that we have to order them. These are thick, crispy, and a little bland so be liberal with the table hot sauce and accompanying ranch dip. photo credit: Juli Horsford Crispy Breakfast Dumplings These four little dough pockets of joy sit in a puddle of maple-soy sauce, which gives everything a sweet kick. This appetizer (filled with savory ground pork) doesn't really go with the rest of the menu, but get them anyway because they’re the perfect start to a meal. Kickstart This is for the breakfast traditionalists. This plate gets you two eggs, bacon, creamy grits, and a giant biscuit that stands out like a majestic mesa on your plate. Simple enough that you can’t go wrong here. Chorizo Tacos You get three tacos. The chorizo is the right amount of salty, the eggs are fluffy, and the pickled onions are tangy—all the necessary components to make this a great breakfast order. photo credit: Juli Horsford Hashed Out We recommend getting this entree to share with the table. The mountain of potato cubes plus salty bits of sausage, bacon, onion, and jalapeño is at least 5-inches high and comes with a dollop of sour cream on top that makes it look like a true summit. Even if you can’t finish it, it’s good enough to attempt the climb. photo credit: Juli Horsford Waffle This waffle is thick, fluffy, and best when drowned in syrup. It'll do if you want something sweet." - Juli Horsford
