"Before this West Hollywood Tex-Mex spot closed in 2020, nights at Marix were always messy, queer, and deeply ceremonial for those who'd been coming to this storied haunt since before the first Bush administration. After five long years, the doors are back open, and a younger generation can finally get in on the fun, too. Just don’t mistake "fun" for great food. Shrimp fajitas are in fact sizzling, but so oversalted that the dish requires aftercare in the form of sleeping with a water bottle for three nights. And the guacamole on everyone’s table tastes close to what you can buy at Gelson’s across the street. video credit: Brant Cox No matter. Weekend lines still form at Marix well before opening and wrap around the corner by 5pm. Why? Because despite the food, spending a night at this mostly-outdoor spot is still a fantastic place to take full advantage of twilight hour. Every party here has at least two margarita pitchers and conversations ranging from the architectural gems of Palm Springs to that time so-and-so got too drunk at Provincetown Pride. Marix is a restaurant, but it’s really a town square—one that never fails to entertain. Food Rundown Shrimp Fajitas Everyone here orders the fajitas, and we could forgive them if they were just oversalted. But $25 for five pieces of shrimp and some sliced onions is another matter. Just order something cheap instead and fill up on chips and salsa. Sizzling Apple Pie Sizzling apple pie at a Tex-Mex restaurant. Get into it. Is it a total copycat of the iconic version at Jones Hollywood? Yes. Is it still the best thing at Marix? Yes. PlayMute video credit: Brant Cox" - Brant Cox
