Bar D4100 Review - Nunhead - London - The Infatuation

"Bar D4100 is the pizza party of our dreams. Specifically the dream where we have a pink-tiled kitchen in Nunhead, nearly-melted candles flickering on tables loaded with pizza, and matching chairs for all our friends to lean back on. This good-times pizzeria started off as a one-time event to bring strangers together over pizza, and now it’s the de facto meeting point for locals craving chewy crusts and £5 spritzes. And even if you’re not local, it’s worth coming here. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Prams are parked higgledy-piggledy outside and friends drop by for impromptu pizza, lured in by the cheery sunflowers and snatches of laughter. On a sunny day, the outside benches fill up quickly with people and pies. Our favourite is The Macgyver with Spanish chorizo, whipped feta, hot honey, and crushed fennel seeds. But all the toppings are interesting, and the aioli dips are top-tier dipping sauces. It's a casual, upbeat spot that's perfect for when you're waiting for payday but still want to get together over pizza and a gooey Nutella and pistachio calzone. Food Rundown photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Why Not Some people have green juices, we like to get our gains from a green pizza. The Why Not has a chewy, blistered crust and a base that’s just holding up under the weight of its toppings. The leeks are sweet and thinly sliced (no long, hard-to-eat strands here), the pancetta has reached that crisp, see-through stage, and the artichoke and olives add a nice tangy, briny flavour. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch The Macgyver If the toppings on this pizza were children, they’d play well together in the sandpit. Creamy, smooth whipped feta adds some coolness to counteract the heat from hot honey and chorizo. And the scattering of fennel seeds is a nice touch too. We’re usually not fans of feta on our pizza, but rather than overpowering chunks, here it melts into the sauce. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Aioli Imagine us saying this in our best M&S voice: “these are not just any dipping sauces, these are Bar D4100’s aioli dipping sauces”. We’ve had the lemon and rosemary aioli and the ‘nduja one, and we think they’re essential. The ‘nduja is creamy, slightly spicy and has a hint of smokiness. The lemon and rosemary is for adults who have graduated from ranch dressing. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Tiramisu As a tiramisu, we didn’t love this. As a very moist, some would say soggy, chocolate sponge—it’s very good. Unfortunately there isn’t much of a coffee kick here, and when we ordered it, there was liquid seeping out on the plate and too much cocoa dusted on top. The sponge, however, was lovely and moist and we appreciated the little chocolate nibs that were scattered throughout. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Nutella & Pistachio Calzone Everyone goes for the tiramisu, but this is our dessert of choice. The dough is crisp on the outside and pillowy in the middle. We like the combination of pistachio cream with toasted pistachios, and the not-too-sweet ricotta. Just know that it’s large, so we like it best as a fun sharer for the table." - Sinéad Cranna
