"I used long-distance coaches as a cheaper alternative to trains and found them comfortable but much slower: for example, Tokyo–Osaka is about 9+ hours by bus versus 3 hours by shinkansen, with fares around 4,800–5,500 JPY for some routes. Willer Express and Japan Bus Lines sell bus passes (starting at 10,200 JPY for three non-consecutive weekday days) and there are overnight options that can save a night’s accommodation; on my last trip the time savings often weren’t worth it when I had limited days, but if you have time the bus can be a very economical and sociable way to travel." - Matthew Kepnes
