"Operating for more than 150 years, the Mount Washington Cog Railway chugs up steep grades averaging 25 percent (with sections up to 38 percent), making it the second-steepest mountain-climbing cog railway in the world; it runs year-round, and in summer offers hourly biodiesel rides as well as less frequent coal-fired steam excursions that use two engines more than 100 years old. Both ride types take about three hours round trip (including a one-hour summit stop), biodiesel fares start at $74 for adults and steam at $87, and I recommend booking in advance to try to reserve a window seat (the railway asks large groups not to reserve all window seats for their party), though aisle seats still provide fantastic views." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists.
