T+L's Hotel Review of Mahali Mzuri Safari Camp in Kenya

"Reopened in June 2025 after a major redesign, this 12‑tent luxury safari camp perches on the side of a lush valley with sweeping views over the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, offering uninterrupted wildlife watching from private decks and communal areas. Developed as part of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition and redesigned in collaboration with Lynne Hunt London, the camp blends contemporary African style with local Maasai craftsmanship—think custom beadwork, bronze spear finials and a warm, culturally rooted aesthetic—while emphasizing sustainability through a solar farm, rainwater harvesting, a greenhouse kitchen garden and electric vehicles. Accommodations feature floor‑to‑ceiling glass, in‑room air conditioning, oversized lounges, king beds, en‑suite bathrooms with freestanding claw‑foot tubs overlooking the plains, generous minibars stocked with African gins and Amarula, and thoughtful touches like binoculars and a French press. Dining is a highlight, with pan‑African cuisine made from locally sourced produce (including cold soups, salads, Kashmiri‑style lamb, vegetarian githeri and decadent desserts), flexible meal locations from private decks to campfire dinners, and all‑inclusive beverages and bar service. Wildlife experiences are intimate and varied thanks to private conservancy access and just five camps in the 33,000‑hectare area: twice‑daily and night drives, assigned guides for continuity, walking safaris with Maasai warrior guides, hot‑air balloon safaris with Champagne breakfasts, and frequent close encounters with elephants, giraffes, zebras and converging lion prides. Family offerings are strong (children accepted from age three, a new family tent, dedicated vehicles and child‑focused activities), while a small spa, heated infinity pool and personalized service (from candlelit balcony meals to nightly turndown touches) complete the restorative bush atmosphere. Practicalities: the camp is remote—best reached via small plane to Mara North or Olare Orok airstrips or a scenic ~5‑hour drive from Nairobi—and nightly rates start from about $3,100 per tent, typically inclusive of meals, drinks, game drives, transfers and laundry." - Jenn Rice
