"If you’re heading to Kōkeʻe State Park, these historic oceanfront cottages in Waimea—about 17 miles from the park’s 45 miles of hiking trails—are a charming, practical base, spread across 43 acres with 59 one- to five-bedroom units built from the late 1880s to the 1930s. They aren’t fancy, but every cottage has a full kitchen and large private lānai, and the property offers a nicely sized pool with lounge chairs (but no poolside drink service or attendants). The long, wild black-sand beach isn’t ideal for swimming, yet it shines for sunset strolls—on clear days you can even glimpse Niʻihau—and with big lawns for soccer and Frisbees and kitchens for home-cooked meals, it’s easy to settle in." - Catherine Toth Fox
