Honua Kai Resort & Spa

"What's the big picture? The Honua Kai is spread out across 38 acres on the northern end of the Kaanapali beachfront area, away from the cluster of big-box resorts, but it’s by no means a quiet hideaway. Since most of the rooms are luxury condos that range from studios to three-bedroom units, with kitchens, washer and dryers and private lanais, you'll feel like you're staying in an apartment. There's also access to resort amenities: multiple pools, a beach, valet car service, and a concierge. Is it part of a chain or independent?Honua Kai is part of the larger Outrigger resorts chain. How are the rooms?Fixtures and appliances are contemporary (the property was built in 2009) but the decor will vary (the units are individually owned). The views from your lanai will also vary, with some offering glimpses of the mountains, resort, and ocean. Book one of the three-bedroom Royal Collection suites for a few other amenities, including use of a midsize car, a dedicated concierge, and daily housekeeping. (Otherwise every other day.) Is there a charge for Wi-Fi?The Wi-Fi is included in the $35 resort fee. What are our drinking and dining options?Honua Kai’s main restaurant is the all-day Duke’s Beach House, which also runs poolside food and drinks. The property also has an Aina Gourmet Market for on-the-go meals, along with a Whalers General Store for toiletries, gifts, and gear. How did you find the service? If you book a rental through VRBO, you’ll deal with the property owner or manager rather than a resort employee. But even if you book through the resort, the service isn’t 24/7. Who else is checking in?Lots of families looking to spread out. Because of the apartment-style digs, you’ll also find folks who are vacationing in Maui for a couple of weeks. What's the neighborhood like?Kaanapali is often viewed as Maui's most crowded, most touristy spot, but it does enjoy easy access to Lahaina and Kapalua. Plus, there’s a lot to do as far as shopping, eating, and entertainment go. Is there anything you'd change? The beach isn’t a very swimmable, and the pool chairs are often claimed early in the morning. Any tips you'd like to share?Head to the Westin Villas next door to use the beach—it’s a little bigger. Most guests here also have a car, making it easy to bump around to other beaches. Bottom line: Worth it? Why?This is a great-value option for families who need the extra room but also want resort amenities." - Juliana Shallcross
