"After mysteriously closing its doors back in March, Washington Avenue sushi restaurant Kukuri is plotting a comeback. The restaurant announced its return in a post to its Facebook page, saying that Kukuri will open again “in a week or two.” Still, details are scarce on why exactly Kukuri closed its doors. When it shuttered, a notice posted to the restaurant’s door indicated that the locks had been changed, and it was paired with a “for lease” sign positioned in the window, which seemed to cement the idea that Kukuri was long gone. In its short six month tenure, Kukuri saw its fair share of ups and downs. When the restaurant opened, it was helmed by Shimao Ishikawa, a sushi chef that had spent time in Michelin-starred kitchens. Ishikawa reportedly left the restaurant at some point in its tenure, and some diners say that Kukuri’s quality declined after his departure. Perhaps they’ve all worked it out, because when Kukuri was at its best, the restaurant earned raves from Houston diners. Eater has reached out to Kukuri’s management for more details on when the restaurant will return and why it closed in the first place." - Amy McCarthy
