"At Cafe Muse in Royal Oak, partner David Smith has taken to working the door and seating guests because it’s difficult to put that responsibility on younger staff; in the week and a half since dine-in service resumed he’s had several unsettling run-ins, including one customer who became irate inside to pay for a carryout order and whose behavior led the owners to call police after co-owner Greg Reyner asked him to step outside and vacate the premises. Smith described another regular who refused to accept the indoor mask requirement, prompting Smith to keep a small supply of masks on hand (which he gives out at extra cost) and to tell patrons who won’t follow rules not to return. He says enforcing masks is stressful—he’s shaken after some conversations—and that wearing masks is about making customers and employees feel safe." - Brenna Houck
