"Opening Friday, October 5th at 1309 Burlingame Avenue, I can visit Salt & Straw's Burlingame shop, the chain's third Bay Area location and its 15th overall. Co‑founders and cousins Kim and Tyler Malek—with Tyler as head ice cream maker—have drawn steady lines in the Bay Area and developed permanent, region-specific flavors using local ingredients, such as Sightglass Coffee cashew praline, Dandelion Chocolate hazelnut cookies and cream, and a Cowgirl Creamery Mt. Tam cheese flavor with Acme Bread and sour cherry jam. For Halloween they rolled out playful, sample-friendly creations available in SF and Burlingame including “Dracula’s Blood Pudding” (Italian-style blood pudding made with Portland’s Nicky USA pig’s blood), “The Great Candytopia” (salted butterscotch with homemade Snickers, Twix chunks, Heath Bars, and peanut butter cups), “Essence of Ghost” (grey sherbet and black cocoa ice cream), and “Creepy Crawly Critters” (matcha ice cream with orange and dark chocolate–covered crickets and coconut toffee brittle mealworms from Don Bugito). They also offer experimental tastes like Old Potrero rye whiskey and cocoa nib sorbet for sampling, and the Burlingame shop is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m." - Caleb Pershan
