"I visited Milkbread in Davidson during its chaotic opening weekend and saw firsthand how demand overwhelmed the tiny cafe — internet crashes, long lines and wiped-out doughnut supplies forced the owners to close for two days to catch up. The cafe operates daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is built on the Kindreds’ fame for milk bread: the doughnuts (they had only a couple flavors during my visit) are outstanding — a single glazed doughnut had a fluffy, yeasty interior and a double-glaze of caramel-y sugar with a hint of cinnamon that put “Hot Now” Krispy Kremes to shame. Mini Cinnies — half-dozen small cinnamon rolls piled with buttery cream cheese icing — were irresistible, and seasonal flavors like Meyer lemon brown butter are being rolled out as the bakery ramps up. The rest of the menu covers breakfast and lunch, from dressed-up toast and grain bowls to crispy chicken sandwiches; the smoked ham toast, with a nose-clearing mustard sauce, a thick slice of gruyere, and a generous pile of arugula and onion (built on whole-grain sourdough from Charlotte’s Verdant Bread), is savory enough to balance the sweets. A second Milkbread is planned for the old Dairy Queen on Central Avenue in Plaza Midwood with a similar menu and walk-up service; construction has begun and they hope to open this summer, though supply-chain and equipment issues could delay that." - Kathleen Purvis
