"Mendocino’s charming, brightly-hued Fog Eater Cafe has character in spades and an unusual menu of Southern-inspired vegetarian dishes, always accompanied by complimentary boiled peanuts. The weekend brunch is particularly popular for its mix of sweet and savory dishes. There is an exceptional and unexpected “crabbie” benedict, made with tofu-and -seaweed not-crab cakes over house-made biscuits and balanced with peppery arugula; beignets served with chocolate and jam made by the team; or a cornbread French toast with apple-sorghum syrup. The restaurant also runs a natural wine bar, Fog Bottle Shop, next door and has an excellent happy hour from 4 to 5 p.m. with bar snacks (think $6 hushpuppies or a plate of bracing, house-pickled vegetables) and $11 house cocktails, like the perfect-for-winter mulled wine with ginger, pink peppercorn, grapefruit juice, and rose petals." - Freda Moon
